Football & Soccer Boots – Podiatry Advice

Football and Soccer Boots - Podiatry Advice

Did you know that there are different types of football boots for different surfaces (grass, synthetic grass/Astroturf), weather (wet vs dry), and sports (soccer, AFL, rugby)?

To add to the confusion of it all, there are multiple brands that have lots of different models. To help make your life easier, I will discuss the different types of boots and go over some of the different models that are currently available.

Various boots will have different layouts of the stud formation on the sole, some will be longer which are better suited to wetter climates, and rugby grounds where the grass is often thicker compared to shorter studs which may work better on synthetic pitches or grounds where the grass is more even.

Another aspect of boots that is often overlooked, is the HHD (heel height difference). This is the height of the heel compared to the toes, for example, in runners this is usually 8-12mm on average, and in boots can often be lower. The lower HHD boots can place increased loads on the calves and Achilles which is an important point to consider in active kids going through large & rapid growth spurts.
