Dr Samantha May is a Sport and Exercise Medicine Registrar who is undertaking specialist training under the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Medicine. She has a passion for treating all musculoskeletal injuries and illnesses, whether it be recreational, elite, or work related. This includes providing advice on specific exercise programs tailored to each individual’s personal needs and limitations.
Samantha completed her Bachelor of Medicine, Surgery and Advanced Medical Science at The University of Melbourne in 2013. She completed a Diploma of Sports Medicine through the International Olympic Committee in 2016, as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Management of Pain by online distance learning through The University of Edinburgh in 2015. She recently completed her Master of Applied Science (Research) through La Trobe University on the topic “Ultrasound Measurement of Gastrocnemius Muscle Architecture in Athletes”.
Samantha is the Club Doctor for the Melbourne Vixens Super Netball squad and supported the team to the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball Premiership. She is also currently the Team Doctor for Essendon Football Club AFLW team, and previously worked for the Western Bulldogs AFLW team for their first two successful years. Samantha works as a Medical Advisor to AFLW and State League Umpires, as well as Waverley Gymnastics. She has also worked amongst elite tennis players at Melbourne Summer Set in 2022, travelled with Cricket Australia Women’s A squad to the UK in 2019, and volunteered as Athletics doctor during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018.
As part of the clinical services in this practice, Samantha is trained to make the appropriate diagnosis, and just as importantly, detect the causes or risk factors that lead to the development of the condition, to minimise the risk of recurrence. She can arrange appropriate investigations from blood tests to ECG’s, and X-rays to complex imaging, including rebatable MRI scans. Once the diagnosis is made, she will advise on treatment and arrange for the appropriate referrals. This may involve giving advice on injury or concussion management including the appropriate rehabilitation program, as well as the prescription of medications or the injection of joints under ultrasound guidance.
Where further specialist allied health and other medical specialist advice is warranted, she can arrange rapid referral to the appropriate practitioners
