Over 50% of runners will develop a running injury in a year and 50% of those running injuries will be knee-related. Knees are very susceptible to injury due to the nature of their anatomical location. Instability and weakness of the hip and poor foot mechanics all place the knee under enormous stress that often leads to problems. Patellofemoral pain, ITB friction syndrome and runner and jumper’s knee are common running and sport related injuries.
Often the cause of knee pain is related to abnormal lower leg biomechanics. If the knee tends to rotate inwards or outwards in gait it can place stress on structures around the knee. Over time with repeated daily and physical activity it can lead to chronic overuse injuries that can be incredibly painful and debilitating. At Melbourne Podiatry Clinic we can accurately assess and measure the hip, knee and foot positions in gait and determine if this is a contributing factor in your knee pain. We can then treat your biomechanical issues with orthotics, gait re-training and lower limb strengthening programs. If you need further investigation from other health professionals, such as physiotherapists or physicians, we can also make the gait analysis video available to them.
Our podiatrists have had a high level of experience in injury rehabilitation. We recognise your desire to return to exercise and daily activities as quickly as possible so we closely work with you to achieve this. We are fortunate enough to have access to a sports physiotherapist onsite who can conduct further assessment and treatment.
Don’t let knee pain prevent you from living an active and healthy life!
