Run Smarter, Not Harder: How Gait Retraining and Cadence Can Transform Your Run
For many runners, the quest for a faster pace can overshadow proper form. This often leads to inefficient running mechanics, which can increase injury risk and hinder performance. Here’s where gait retraining and cadence come in – a powerful duo that can transform your running experience.
Understanding Gait Retraining:
Imagine your running style as a personal signature. Gait refers to your specific pattern of leg and foot movements during running. Unfortunately, over time, bad habits or imbalances can creep in, leading to a less efficient and potentially injury-prone gait.

4 Sign You Might Have Plantar Fasciitis
Is your sore foot Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is easily the most common foot injury that I will see as a podiatrist. Some reports suggest that it affects 1 in 10 people! That’s absolutely nuts.
The problem with it being so common though, is that it has become a quick throwaway diagnosis for any type of foot pain- not only from your friends and family, teammates and coaches, but from qualified health professionals as well.
The foot is a very complex structure, and different conditions present themselves similarly to plantar fasciitis. It is important that we get the diagnosis correct to ensure you

Can I Wear Orthotics in Shoes That Already Have Support in Them?
As a sports podiatrist, we understand the importance of proper footwear and the role orthotics can play in addressing various foot conditions and enhancing performance. However, a common question that arises is whether it’s possible to wear orthotics in shoes that already come with built-in support. In this blog, we will explore this topic and provide insights into whether it’s advisable to use orthotics in shoes that already offer their own support.
Understanding Orthotics:
Orthotics are custom-made inserts that are designed to provide additional support, stability, and correction to the feet. They can be particularly beneficial for individuals with specific foot conditions
Why have my feet got bigger post pregnancy?
As a podiatrist, I’ve seen a lot of women whose feet change size during and after pregnancy. But why does this happen? Let’s take a closer look at some of the reasons.
First off, weight gain is a big factor. As your body changes, your feet have to handle the extra load. This can cause your arches to change shape and your feet to widen, especially as you get closer to your due date. And if you’re not careful, it can also lead to foot pain or plantar fasciitis.
Hormones also play a role. During pregnancy, your body produces a hormone called
Understanding Sever’s Disease: A Podiatrist’s Guide for Parents and Coaches
As a podiatrist, I am constantly seeing young athletes who are suffering from Sever’s disease, a condition that causes heel pain in children and adolescents. This is a common issue at this time of year, as many children and teenagers are involved in sports such as soccer, netball, and Australian Rules football.
Sever’s disease, also known as calcaneal apophysitis, is a condition that affects the growth plate in the heel bone. During periods of growth, the growth plate can become inflamed and painful. This condition is most common in children between the ages of 8 and 14, as this is a

Will my Podiatrist tell me to stop wearing high heels?
As a podiatrist, my primary concern is to promote foot health and prevent foot problems. For this reason, I often advise my patients to wear appropriate shoes that provide proper support and cushioning. However, I also understand that fashion and personal preferences can sometimes take precedence over foot health. While high heels are often considered to be one of the most inappropriate types of shoes for the feet, there are times when it may be okay to wear them.
First, it’s important to understand that wearing high heels for extended periods can put a lot of stress on the feet, ankles,
How long do I need to wear orthotics?
The duration of time that you will need to wear orthotics depends on the specific condition that is being treated and the progress of your treatment. Some people may only need to wear orthotics for a short period of time, while others may need to wear them for an extended period or even indefinitely.
In some cases, orthotics may be worn temporarily to help alleviate pain and discomfort while a specific condition is healing. Once the condition has improved, the orthotics may no longer be needed.
In other cases, orthotics may be prescribed as a long-term treatment option to help manage a
Are Asics the best running shoes?
Asics are a popular brand of running shoes that have been around for decades. But are Asics really the best choice for runners? Here’s a closer look at the pros and cons of Asics running shoes.
One of the main advantages of Asics running shoes is their comfort. Many runners swear by the brand’s Gel cushioning system, which is designed to absorb shock and provide a smooth ride. Asics shoes also tend to have a wider
Can I stop wearing my orthotics in summer?
Orthotics, also known as foot orthoses, are devices that are worn inside shoes to help correct problems with the feet and lower limbs. We often prescribe orthotics to help alleviate pain and discomfort caused by conditions such as plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, and flat feet – but it can be tricky to wear them in summer.
If you have been prescribed orthotics, it is important to wear them as directed by your podiatrist in order to achieve the maximum benefit. However, this can be a challenge during the summer months when you may want to wear thongs, sandals or open-toed shoes.

What is the difference between custom orthotics and pre-fabricated orthotics?
Orthotics are devices that are used to support, align, or improve the function of the feet, ankles, and legs. They are often prescribed by podiatrists to help with issues such as flat feet, bunions, plantar fasciitis, and other conditions that can cause pain or discomfort while walking or standing. There are two main types of orthotics: custom orthotics and pre-fabricated orthotics.
Custom orthotics are made specifically for an individual based on a mould or impression of their feet. This process usually involves taking a cast or scan of the feet, which is then used to create a 3D model of the
What is the difference between Podiatry and Physio?
A physio and a podiatrist are both healthcare professionals who focus on the treatment and management of musculoskeletal conditions. However, there are some key differences between the two professions that are important to understand.
A physio, or physiotherapist, is a healthcare professional who specializes in the treatment of physical conditions that affect the body’s muscles, bones, and joints. They use a variety of techniques, including exercise, massage, and other physical therapies, to help people recover from injuries, manage chronic conditions, and improve their overall health and well-being. Physios often work with patients who have been injured in sports or other physical

Switzer, at the age of 20 was the only female in her college running club and made it her mission to prove women are not only capable of running a marathon but are well suited to the event.
Switzer and women, in general, were not encouraged to run at this time. She was warned by doctors

How to prevent Corns
Corns and the foot
No! We aren’t talking about corn that you eat, but more specifically, the little round spots that can sometimes present on the foot.

Why you don’t need to be an athlete to get athlete’s foot!
Let’s get one thing straight. You don’t need to be an athlete to get athlete’s foot!
Athlete’s foot is the colloquial term for tinea pedis, a fungal infection of the superficial layer of the skin. It manifests as scaling, itchy, red, inflamed conditions between your toes and/or the soles of your feet. Fungal spores thrive in warm, moist, humid environments and are highly contagious, spreading easily amongst family members and areas of the body if not treated correctly.

6 Most Common Training Errors by Runners
With the onset of Covid-19, we have seen a significant number of people pull on their running shoes and hit the pavement. While this has been fantastic to see, a large number of these people have not had enough support and guidance around this foray into running and have developed, sometimes serious, running injuries. We have seen a huge spike in running injuries in the clinic during the past 12 months that were potentially caused simply by training errors. So consequently, we reached out to expert running consultant Nathan Heaney to discuss the 6 most common training errors people tend
Fungal Nails In Runners
Running provides the ultimate environment for the development of fungal nail infections. If you’ve been running for a while, it’s safe to say your nails have probably surprised you on at least one occasion post-run! So, tell us! Were your nails black, brown, yellow or just no longer attached to the nail bed when you pulled off those socks?
First things first, a black nail doesn’t always predispose to fungal infection. More often than not, a black nail is the result of trauma to the nail bed; a constant pressure and friction that results in bruising and pigment changes (due to
Ingrown Toenail Prevention
There are many ways to help decrease the risk of getting an ingrown toenail.
However, it is important to note that sometimes ingrown toenails are unavoidable.
Self-managed:
Steps to take to decrease the risk of an ingrown toenail at home
Do not pick at your toenails or the skin around the nail
Try not to peel your toenails when they are too long, this can cause the nails to become accidentally too short and can cause some mild trauma on the side of the skin near your nail
When cutting your nails, always cut straight across and never curved.
Let your nails grow out and only cut

Cycling Orthotics for Comfort and Performance
A skill once taught and never forgotten, cycling has been present for centuries. Like all skills there is the prospect of regression and progression as we come to terms with injury, equipment changes or differences in surfaces that we complete these activities on – cycling is no different.
However, cycling is not a natural activity for humans, it places us in a connection between humans and machines where our lower limbs are expected to work like pistons.
In true road cycling, where the foot is latched to the pedal via cleats or a strap and both a push and pulling motion
Pain Under The Big Toe
If you suffer from pain under the ball of your big toe, it could be several things but one very common issue is an injury to your sesamoid bones. So what are your sesamoid bones? Well, our podiatrist Tess explains.
The sesamoid bones are round bones embedded into or close to a tendon. They are found in the knee, hand, wrist and of course the foot. In the foot, they are small rounded bones located in the base of the big toe. These tiny bones resemble sesame seeds, hence their name. The sesamoids provide an anchor for the tendon to glide

New Orthotics – What To Expect
Orthotics are a very effective, simple way to help reduce the load on certain areas in the foot and leg to allow these areas to recover or improve their function. Typically orthotics will be used in combination with other therapies such as dry needling, soft tissue therapy, shockwave and exercise rehabilitation. Given that feet are required to handle significant loads due to standing and walking (let alone running), an orthotic provides a powerful way to reduce stress to the injured area and allow normal movement without pain.
However, many people have concerns with orthotics and one of the main concerns is that

Are we our own worst enemy? The role of mental health in injury management
Take a minute to reflect on this question:
How do you feel when you are injured?
Can you pinpoint the emotions you felt after spraining an ankle in a scratch match? Was there a clear outburst of frustration or a cloud of anger or sadness lingering deep within your stomach? Hearing the words, “no exercise for 2 weeks,” or “sit out of that game for now” is completely and utterly shattering for the majority of the population, and often is not even a possibility in the minds of many. So why is it that in our society we are so determined to

Ankle rehab, is it really that important?
It’s common that at some point in your life you’ve sprained your ankle. Whether that was 10 years ago playing a football final or yesterday afternoon carrying in the groceries to accidentally miss a step and roll your ankle. Did you seek any treatment afterwards? Often the answer is no, and it is certainly something I myself am guilty of doing. Usually, a bag of peas does the trick. However, working in the podiatry profession I am now exposed to the long term disability associated with not undertaking any rehabilitation post-injury! If I could turn back the clock, I would
Do you have a stress fracture?????
Tara Bo(ne)wman talks ???? BONES ???? and bone stress injuries.
As someone who has endured (and I don’t use that term loosely) two bone stress injuries in the past 6 months I know all too well just how frustrating and debilitating they can be. That dull poorly localized ache that you can’t seem to shake, pain with every stride of a run, pain that coincides with an increase in training or breaks from training. These are all common signs and symptoms of a bone stress injury.
The BEST way to prevent stress fractures is to prevent them from occurring in the first

5 Tips Before You Train for a Marathon
New Patient Offer below ????????????????
1. Address Niggles Early
Research suggests that anywhere up to 90% of people training for a marathon are injured at some point during their journey. This may happen for many reasons but training error is by far the most common. That moment where you say “I’ll just go that little bit further, faster or harder.” When you fill your glass a little too much and the body says enough is enough. Seeing a professional, developing a plan and modifying your activity to keep you on track is the best way to ensure you are reaching that finish
Pain in the Forefoot

Reaching New Years Running Goals Without Getting Injured
Another new year has rolled around, you’ve set those all important running goals for the year and it’s time to put in the hard work. However, whether it’s hitting that Park Run PB or targetting a specific running event your risk for injury is at its highest within the first four weeks of increasing your training load. This will generally occur if the amount of increased load placed upon the body exceeds the ability of the tissue to handle the new stress, thus placing them at risk of failing under load and resulting in injury. The majority of injuries we see
Pre-Marathon checklist: Step 2
So now you have the right shoes, let’s talk running. Most first-time marathoners get injured during their training, not on race day. The reason? They do too much, too soon – i.e. they exceed their current body’s abilities to tolerate stress and this results in an injury. Your body takes time to adapt to the demands of running and therefore you must increase your load gradually to reduce your chances of developing an injury. 42,195m is a hell of a lot of distance to cover. PLANNING is what keep runners injury-free and race day ready. When it comes to planning

training and kms to get you there. It is something many want to tick off the bucket list but the physical and psychological demands make the marathon a true test of human endurance. I’ve created a series of blog posts compiling my top tips to put your best foot forward on race day.
You Don’t Have To Be An Elite Athlete To Get Treated Like One
Whether you are just starting out or have just competed in the Commonwealth Games, once you develop an injury the treatment you receive from your health professional should be the same.

1. Not Warming Up…Properly

Priming the muscles is important as it prepares them for activity after a time of rest, whether that’s sitting at a desk all day or rolling out of bed to start the day.
