Forefoot Pain: What it is and how to treat it

Do you suffer from pain in the front part of your foot? Does it hurt to run or wear high heel shoes? You may be suffering a very common forefoot complaint called Morton's neuroma.Forefoot Pain Melbourne

Morton's neuroma is a thickened nerve tissue typically presenting at the ball of the foot or between the spaces of the toes.

Morton’s Neuroma is generally a result of chronic irritation to the nerve, which leads to a thickening of the nerve ending. Morton’s Neuroma is often caused by trauma or compression of the nerve which may lead to pain. If left untreated, Morton’s Neuroma can progress to become chronic and may be difficult to treat.

Symptoms:

Symptoms are characterised by pain or numbness at the ball of the foot or between the spaces of the toes. Patients often report feeling like they are walking on a pebble. Pain may be localized to the site or may refer depending upon the severity of the issue.

Diagnosis:

Your Podiatrist will use a series of clinical tests to identify if you have a Morton’s Neuroma and rule out any other injuries in the area.

An ultrasound may be used to aid diagnosis depending upon the severity.

Treatment:

Treatment may involve the use of orthotics, prescribing appropriate footwear, strapping, and padding. In addition, a biomechanical assessment may be used to determine your movement patterns, with exercises directly prescribed to improve walking/running efficiency. A cortisone injection may be required if the issue remains chronic.

Neuromas can be treated by:

  • Orthotics
  • Appropriate Footwear
  • Strapping and Padding
  • Rest
  • Icing
  • Injection therapy
  • Surgical intervention
  • Anti-inflammatory medicine (topical or oral)
